The notion that the first purchase from a customer is typically the least profitable is a common belief in the business world. Navalayo Osembo, co-founder and CEO of Enda Athletic, shared her thoughts on this matter and highlighted the importance of developing a sound strategy while avoiding potential pitfalls.

Navalayo emphasized that, as a business, it is essential to consider the overall strategy and financial viability when dealing with customer acquisition costs. While some companies with substantial resources may adopt a strategy of accepting losses in the short term to capture market share, it can be a risky game, particularly for smaller businesses with limited cash flow. Navalayo advised against incurring debt to sustain such a strategy, cautioning against the potential dangers it poses for smaller businesses.

Instead, Navalayo suggested focusing on maintaining healthy profit margins and ensuring that the business can cover essential expenses such as operational costs and employee salaries. This approach allows for sustainability and minimizes the risks associated with losing money on every initial sale. While she acknowledged that some businesses can absorb these costs as part of a larger long-term strategy, Navalayo stressed the importance of having a clear plan in place to recoup the losses and demonstrate return on investment (ROI).

Navalayo further emphasized the need to establish a company culture that discourages waste. Indiscriminate acceptance of losses without a defined timeline for recouping them can lead to a slippery slope where justifications for continued losses become the norm.
